Thoughts at Christmas

A friend of mine sent this you tube video to me and as I listened to it I was transported to my earlier years when at this time of the night 11:45pm as it is now, I was in church ready for the midnight mass. The feeling that surrounded me is indescribable. The cool chill in the air, the aromatic scent of Joseph’s breath, the lighted candles, the sound of the organ as it roars in harmonious notes, the presence of the church parishioners as they anticipated what was going to be a solemn mass. That was how I started Christmas.
And so it happened. And when it was over everyone with outstretched arms hugged and greeted each other with immense warmth. That was how I grew up knowing Christmas.
Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas. Let’s face it. Christmas is now so commercial it is a rape of a man made idea, an idea where we are all called to keep our conscience good and clean, even for one day. A good conscience is a continual Christmas so Christmas really is all year.
Friends, Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a feeling. Unless we make Christmas an occasion to share our blessings, all the snow in Alaska won’t make it ‘white’. All the trees in Canada won’t make it festive. I may sound pious but I really thought I would write my true feelings. Everyone says these words continually…”Merry Christmas …” honestly I really don’t think they know what it means.
There are some people who want to throw their arms round you simply because it is Christmas; and there are other people who want to strangle you simply because it is Christmas. Next to a circus there ain’t anything that packs up and tears out faster than the Christmas spirit. So friends stop and think when you say those words Merry Christmas. Say it with your heart, not with your mouth. If you cannot be like a child at Christmas then sadly you will never enjoy it. Be at home not only in body but in spirit and heart. And remember he who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree. Blessings, peace and love forever to you my friends here and abroad. With all my heart, have a blessed and merry Christmas.
