Okra has never been a favourite of mine. Jamaicans eat this plant with steamed fish topped with crackers. Have to admit, it is delicious but the okra was just too slimy for my taste. Growing up you hear a lot of talk about its benefits but until recently more research has shown where it helps in the natural cure of breast cancer. Here is the latest report.

ocraOkra Kills 72% of Breast Cancer Cells & Slows Growth in Vitro: A newly discovered lectin in common okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) was shown to kill 72% of human breast cancer cells (MCF7) in vitro, mostly by inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis). The okra extract was also shown to slow the growth of breast cancer cells by 63%. It’s interesting that we are still discovering new anti-cancer compounds in common foods we eat on a regular basis. The research on #okrafor preventing #cancer is just starting up, however another recent study has shown that okra pectin is active against highly metastatic melanoma cells (B16F10), reducing their proliferation, inducing cell cycle arrest and programmed cell death (apoptosis). In another study, the “Southern” eating pattern, characterized by eating okra, grits, cornbread, beans, rice and sweet potatoes, was shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 40% in a group of American men, but interestingly a diet richer in fruit & vegetables did not reduce risk in that group. Bottom line: okra is a healthy food which is already widely consumed, and now latest research tells us it may give protection from at least three different cancers. More research is needed to confirm this in humans but in the meantime, it may be a good choice to add okra to your regular diet, which should already contain a wide variety of vegetables – and plenty of them. For years I have not eaten okra until about 2 weeks ago when a friend who is a herbalist told me to try it as a drink. I had no idea this made a great drink but he said try it and if I liked it, come back to him. i tried it and loved it and it has become my daily go to filler- upper. It is ideal for those who desire to eat healthy, it keeps your weight down, it provides great antioxidants and cholesterol cleansing properties and it is also delicious. Its okra and oats. Here’s the recipe!

4 large okra  , 1 cup oats, 2 cups water, 2 tablespoon honey, vanilla, nutmeg , blender

1. Pour 2 cups of water in blender

2. Cut okra in small cubs add to water.

3. Pour in oats , grate your nutmeg, a teaspoon of vanilla, all in and puree.

4. Add some crushed ice to make a nice cold drink, pour in glass and voila, you have the perfect drink. For the guys, its also a good and natural aphrodisiac.
